Job Summary

Performs simple to complex clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of the laboratory. Work requires a professional level of knowledge in order to perform, interpret and record patient test results, especially those which are abnormal or atypical. Duties may vary by assigned area but include quality control performance and interpretation, basic instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, proficiency testing assignments and basic inventory management.

Certification as a medical laboratory scientist within a defined timeframe set forth by Lakeland.

Independently performs patient testing in one or more sections of the laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank) according to laboratory procedures and established turnaround times. Includes waived, moderate and high complexity tests. Testing includes knowledge of specimen acceptability requirements and result interpretation. Based on clinical specimen type/information, uses professional knowledge to prioritize testing and communication, as appropriate, for patient care. Performs quality control insuring instrument or test reliability and accuracy prior to reporting patient test results according to laboratory policies and procedures. Resolves all out of control situations and when necessary, escalates the problem to the appropriate individual in a timely manner. Performs basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; escalates equipment issues appropriately. Utilizes the LIS and EHR to report / document patient results according to policies and procedures. Follows appropriate laboratory polices for notification of critical results, communicable disease and other unusual situations. Performs and results proficiency testing, as assigned, according to laboratory procedures. Follows all laboratory safety procedures to minimize the risk to self and others; reports gaps and/or recommendations. Responsible for maintaining inventory for the workstation and equipment. Abilities: Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to, evenings, weekends, extended shifts and/or extra shifts, various locations, sometimes on short notice.
Environmental Conditions: Potential exposure to fumes, dust, gases, and odors. Frequent changes in temperature may occur. Possibility of exposure to communicable diseases.
