Job Description:
Doctors' Assistant (Scribe) REPORTS TO:
Scribe Supervisor
Summary:
Following patient confidentiality guidelines, the Doctors' Assistant (Scribe) is responsible for assisting the doctor in the examination room.
Responsible for transcribing information into patients' charts during the doctor's examination.
Answers patient questions, provides patients and families with information regarding the doctor's plan, next steps, and at-home care procedures.
Assists in minor surgical procedures, both sterile and non-sterile.

Demonstrates excellent skills in verbal and written English communications to meet documentation standards.
Basic computer skills and organizational skills.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build cooperative working relationships with all staff members, patient, families, and visitors.

Ability to relate and work effectively with others, demonstrating respect for co-workers and doctors.
5.
Understand and demonstrate importance of maintaining a neatly organized work area.
6.
High School graduate or GED equivalent required.
7.
Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and be adaptable to various and changing situations.

Ability to multi-task.
Responsibilities:
1.
Responsible for transcribing information into patient's chart during the doctor's examination.
2.
Assists the doctor in the examination room.
This includes, but is not limited to, chart presentation to the doctor, instilling drops and ointments, writing prescriptions, recording examination assessments and plans in the chart, and phoning doctors on consultations.
3.
Responsible for providing information to patients regarding their disease, medication, and care.
This includes, but is not limited to showing informational videos, instructing patient on the proper use of their medications, explaining procedures, carrying out the doctor's orders, and answering patient questions.
4.
Returns patient phone calls, determining the question and finding the necessary answer, while assessing progress reports, carrying out physicians' orders, triaging urgent calls, and calling in patient prescriptions.
5.
Completes history and physical forms including blood pressure and heart rate.
6.
Assists with surgical procedures, sterile and non-sterile.
Draws injectables.
Removes sutures.
Operates microscope for surgical procedures.
7.
Maintains understanding of the laser and the types of laser lenses.
8.
Maintains working knowledge of office protocols, including, but not limited to, handling sharps and blood borne pathogens; completing incident reports; understanding office safety procedures.
9.
Utilizes office phones, fax machines, copiers, and computers.
10.
Maintains CPR and defibrillator certifications.
11.
Schedules referrals to other physicians.
12.
Schedules various follow-up appointments, including, but not limited to, CT-scans, MRI's, EKG's, carotid ultrasounds, and labs.
Maintains proper follow-up on labs that were ordered according to protocol.
Maintains proper follow-up on referrals that were done according to protocol.
13.
Locates incoming labs on a daily basis.
14.
Summarizes patient records from other physicians.
15.
Runs indicator strips and spore counts in sterilizer and runs through incubator.
16.
Maintains a well-organized and neat work area.
Stocks and maintains clean, organized exam rooms.
Stocks treatment (ditzel) trays.
Cleans and maintains sterilizer and instruments.
Cleans up after patients in exam rooms and restrooms.
Daily checks refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
Cleans Volk 90D and 20D lenses daily.
Checks sterilization of packs and pouches daily.
Checks calibration of blood pressure cuffs monthly.
Inspects outdated drops and injectables.

Updates stat kits.
18.
Keeps doctors' on-call bags updated.
Keeps On Call examination room properly stocked.
19.
Understands how to operate battery packs and indirects.
20.
Updates glaucoma flow-sheet and understands the steps of patients not at the goal.
21.
Pulls and files patient charts.
22.
Completes necessary patient forms, including, but not limited to, patient assistance forms, corneal cultures and biopsies forms.
23.
Able to use eye wash station.
24.
Able to perform basic histories:
VA, Tensions, BATs, etc.
Knows how to perform various diagnostic tests.
25.
Understands how to check blood glucose levels.
26.
Works designated late nights to close equipment and rooms.
27.
Performs cross-trained duties when requested by doctor or supervisor.
28.
Completes special projects as requested and assigned by the doctor or supervisor.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to demonstrate customer-focused interpersonal skills in order to interact in an effective manner with physicians, staff, patients and families.
Ability to collaborate with all teams and various levels of personnel as part of a team.
Ability to organize, prioritize, and have time management skills.
Ability to work extended work hours beyond normal work schedule to include but not limited to evenings, extended shifts, and or extra shifts on short notice.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be in good physical and mental health.
Long periods in stationary positions required throughout work period.
The person in this position needs to frequently move about inside the office.
Must have good hearing and legible handwriting.
The person in this position frequently communicates with patients, patients' families, co-workers, and doctors.
Must have ability to cope with physical and mental stress.
Frequently moves, transports, positions, and helps patients from room to room and in/out of chairs, as needed.
